Am I my brother's keeper?
Yes, I am. Or maybe I'm not. At least, not by myself. When I think of all the coincidences and events that have transpired to get the Kids Project to this point, I am overwhelmed by what has been accomplished in such a short time - the willingness of almost every one that I talk to help in some way. A teacher who comes to church at St. Anne for Saturday morning Mass hands me a $50 dollar bill and wishes me continued success. One of my mail customers who cleans up a section of roadside in Brimfield now leaves me a bag of cans every couple of days hanging from her mailbox. Two women from St. Anne want to come to the Congo to do mission work on their vacations once I'm over there.
You see, this is not just some community service project or another volunteer effort. In 2012, my son will graduate from high school and I will be eligible to retire from the Postal Service. My "retirement" plans will hopefully come to bear fruit. God willing, I will have the opportunity to meet the kids and change their lives in a tangible way. With my retirement money, I would like to begin growing gardens, raising chickens and livestock through the development of a co-op system. In this way, there is a start to break the cycle of hunger and poverty, foster a sense of community, teach families to work towards a common goal and provide nutritious food all at once. I feel the Lord set this fire within me to spread as far and as wide as possible. Will you join me on this journey?
